Equality Is Blind: Why Equal Has To Mean Equal

All Means All

  • We claim to be fighting for equality
  • We have feminists fighting hard for women’s rights but at the same time shaming women who choose to stay home
  • We can’t continue to pick and choose which parts of Equality we want to accept

When MLK had his dream, the dream we all cling to so ferociously and fearlessly, do you think he ever envisioned a time like ours?

Did he ever think we’d have a black president, or even have an overqualified woman run for office and lose to an under-qualified reality star?

A world where equality has been so suffocated by conservatives and liberals, yet somehow both sides keep trying to resurrect it by ONLY digging up the pieces they like.

We all want equality… but should we only pursue it if we can get it on our terms?

Let’s take a second as liberals to turn the mirror around, first and foremost to my own liberalism…

So, before you try to disqualify my liberal card, let me introduce myself properly. Afa’m bu (My name is) Ezinne Iroanya; first generation female immigrant from West Africa. I could quite literally tick almost every stereotypical box a liberal is “supposed” to.

So let’s move on and get back to the actual article, shall we?

Now, we claim to be fighting for equality, for a space where every type of person can thrive and be accepted for standing in their truth. However, as soon as we encounter someone with different ideologies that do not completely align with ours, we go into fight mode.

How can we claim to want true Equality when we can’t accept anyone that does not think like us?

We have feminists fighting hard for women’s rights but at the same time shaming women who choose to stay home.

Black activists fighting for equality, but suddenly mute when LGBTQ issues arise.

White protesters going hard for their black friends but stone cold silent when their Aunt Susan stereotypes the black kid down the street.

What happened to intersectionality?

When did we lose sight of what we had been toiling so hard for?

Did we ever even plan to accept the others?

Perhaps we never thought this far into it and just hoped that everyone else would conform to our way of life…

If Equality is what we truly desire and we want a world where all types of people can coexist together, then something has to give.

I understand this might be a bitter pill to swallow, because liberals have been the ugly step-children of America.

We have had to fight for decades for EVERY SINGLE right we have now and we are still fighting.

In actuality, we don’t owe others a penny or even a drop of water.

However, it is our responsibility to be Intersectional activists.

I’m not suggesting we all light a bonfire and sing folksongs with each other, but I’m insisting that we practice listening a little more.

Not every tweet from an ignorant needs to be addressed, not every troll on Facebook needs to be fired

We can’t continue to pick and choose which parts of Equality we want to accept.

If this is what we want, then we must learn to fully abide by our standards.

We can stand in our truths without compromising our beliefs and still be advocates for our fellow human beings…
